There is one great challenge that all of us human being has… Many of us find it really difficult to follow others… many of us want to be in the position where others follow us… we hate being led by others… we seem to always want our own way… and find it really difficult subjecting ourselves to the dictate of others. Everyone seems to want to be a leader… no one wants to be a follower.

But do you realize that to become like Jesus in our words, thoughts, and actions we must be willing to become a follower? Yes, my friend; no one who wants to enter the Kingdom of Heaven will get there if they don’t decide to become a follower of Christ. Let us take a few minutes to look at the brief conversation that Jesus had with Levi in Luke 5:27-28. The word of the Lord said:

27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

28 And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

What do you notice about this conversation apart from the fact that it was brief? Jesus made one request that involved two words. He didn’t provide an explanation as to why this request was given. He didn’t provide any information on where He was going to take Levi and what Levi was expected to do. Jesus simply said “follow me”.

To get a good understanding of what Jesus was really saying to Levi, let us look at what the Larry Pierce’s Outline of Biblical Usage has to say about the Greek word “mmm” that is used for “follow” in this passage of scripture. The word “follow” can be used to mean:

to follow one who precedes, join him as his attendant, accompany him

to join one as a disciple, become or be his disciple – i.e. side with his party

Jesus was asking Levi to join him and become one of his disciples. Notice that Levi was a tax collector - someone that the Jews didn’t like. Yet Jesus asked this unliked man to become one of His disciples. In verse 28, the Bible records Levi’s response… Levi dropped everything that he was doing and decided to become a disciple. He didn’t say to Jesus, let me go home and consult with my family first. He didn’t say, let me think about it and get back to you. He didn’t say, tell me some more about the role of the disciple. He didn’t say, I am not sure that this is my spiritual gift. He dropped everything and decided to accept the call to become a disciple of Jesus.

As you take some time to reflect on this passage of scripture ask yourself this question, “Have I LEFT ALL to become a disciple of Jesus? Is there anything that I am holding unto that is causing me to NOT give my all to Jesus so that I can become a COMPLETE DISCIPLE for Him? It is my prayer that you take some time to reflect on how you have answered the call from Jesus - “Follow Me.”

As a Christian have you ever wondered if you are truly converted? For many of us Christians, this is not necessarily a question that we may have taken the time to try to answer. Could it be that you believe you are converted because of one or more of the following occurring in your life?

I gave my heart to Jesus and I am a member of the church.

I am actively involved in the work of the church in terms of participation in planning and execution of programmes.

I am an Elder and the Chief Administrator who has responsibility for feeding the flock.

I read my Bible every day and talk to God in prayer. I also do My Bible Study Lesson Plan each day.

I have family worship each morning.

I am sure you could include other things on the list as indicators that you are converted. When was the last time you looked at the meaning of the word “converted” as outlined in Acts 3:19. In this passage of scripture, the Apostle Paul, made the point that before you can be converted you must repent, and it is a combination of repentance and conversion that will result in your sins being blotted out. So, here Paul makes the point that “to be converted” is very important for us to receive eternal life. So, let us look at what the Larry Pierce’s Outline on Biblical Usage as to say about the word “converted”.

1. to turn to
- the worship of the true God

2. to cause to return, to bring back
- to the love and obedience of God
- to the love for the children
- to love wisdom and righteousness

So, we see that conversion has to do with turning away from a life of sin and turning towards a life where we serve God and are obedient to all His words. While this may seem to be a simple exercise, I am sure you know the difficulty associated with keeping your eyes and heart on Jesus… and most important I am sure you continue to feel the struggle associated with overcoming sin in the flesh. Could it be that because of these struggles that you believe you are not really converted? And could it be that because of the length of time you have spent in the church and the amount of work you are doing for the Lord, you believe you are converted? Today, as you reflect on these words, if someone should ask you to share some indication to confirm that you are converted, what would you share? Do you really know if you are converted? Think about this for a moment.

Morris Venden in the book, You Friend the Holy Spirit, highlights seven questions which if answered in the affirmative indicates that you are converted. Here are the questions.

Is Jesus the Centre and focus of your life?

Do you have a deep interest in God’s words Word?

Do you have a meaningful prayer life?

Do you have a daily experience in the things of God?

Do you admit your sinful condition?

Do you have inner peace?

Do you have a desire to share with others the new life in Christ that you have found?

Today as you reflect on this message, please ask God to help you to answer this question since being converted is essential in ensuring that you will be sitting at the welcome table when Jesus comes the second time to take His children to Heaven. Please continue to allow the Holy Spirit to take full and complete control of every single area of your life.

"I will come again..." John 14:3

Life is full of uncertainty. It is fleeting. There is an old saying, ‘Here today, gone tomorrow’. These days it seems more accurate to say, ‘Here now, gone the next minute’. The word of God tells us, 1“My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass”; 2“As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.”

Yet amidst the uncertainty and the brevity of life, the Bible also gives us hope of a life with permanence and certainty. God’s word is filled with precious promises that we can cling to in these troublesome times. Yes, my friends, God’s promises are true, and we can trust Him to keep those promises to us.

From a child, my favourite promise has been John 14:1-3. Part of verse 3 says, “I will come again”. These four words, sitting by themselves may not mean much. However, when they are read in connection with the two preceding verses, they take on a whole new meaning. For me, this promise of God radiates HOPE, and I pray it does for you too.

Hope of the Happiest of Times, where heaven will be Home, Sweet Home.
Hope of Ongoing Jubilation, daily saying “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty.”
Hope of Plenty Fruit to be enjoyed from the Tree of Life.
Hope of Eternal Life with Jesus, the Saviour of the world.

Be of good cheer friends. God has a plan to take us away from this uncertain, temporary life. Open your heart to Jesus and claim His promises. Will you trust His promises to you today?

I encourage you to read God’s promises daily. Watch and pray as you wait for His return and keep this song in your heart:

3Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Thru eternal ages let His praises ring;
Glory in the highest I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

I am sure that sometimes you wonder why you and other Christians experience such hardship. I am sure you wonder why some families in the church are broken and filled with so many issues. I am sure you wonder why those people who dedicate themselves to serving the Lord seem to be troubled on every side and in distress. Shouldn’t the life of the Christian be one where things go smooth? Shouldn’t the life of those who walk away from the things of the world be one of goodness and prosperity? Afterall, the God that we serve is one that owns the cattle upon a thousand hills. So, why do God’s people seem to get a hard time on this earth in every area of their lives?

When we look at what is happening around us, sometimes we cannot help but ask God, why do you allow these negative things to happen to your people? Shouldn’t they be the head and not the tail? How do you expect the those who are in the world to be encouraged to give their lives to you if your people seem to be suffering? The Bible reminds us that God’s ways are not our ways, and that sometimes God does things or allow things to occur that we will just not understand. But the text for this morning should put what we see around us into perspective. In Romans 8:28 the Bible says the following using the New Living Translation.

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

Here the Apostle Paul makes the point that for those of us Christians who love the Lord, no matter what is happening in our lives, positive or negative, God will work it for our good. Even though we are in pain because of the things that others have done to us, God said that He will work it for our good. Even though we are worried because of the illness of a loved one, God said that He would work it for our good.

Today God is reminding us to focus our attention on loving Him. Focus our attention on ensuring that the love of God is shed abroad in our heart, and then we can rest assured that God will work all the things in our lives for our good.

Today God is reminding you to TRUST HIM. God wants you to believe in Him and what He is telling you this morning. Even though the tunnel ahead looks dark, this morning God is telling you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel even if you cannot see it.

It is my prayer that as you take some time to reflect on what is happening in your life at this moment, that you will ask the Holy Spirit to help you continue to trust in God will all your heart and believe in the message that He gave to you today through the Apostle Paul. It is such a good thing to know that we can trust that God will always take care of us and work all things for our good. Let us continue to love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind.”

Which person in the world do you want to please the MOST? Have you ever given thought to this question? I am sure if you should give thought to this question, the following people would come to mind.

Wife

Husband

Mother

Father

Girlfriend

Boyfriend

Significant other

Best Friend

And the list could go on and on…

I am sure that for some of us we may have “God” in that list, but based on the way the question was asked, one could assume that I was referring to which human being in the world, since the question said “persons”. Could it be that although we ask questions, we see God as God and not as a person? Could it be that even within the confines of the church, we are encouraged to revere and worship God but not to focus on pleasing Him? Could it be that we have been socialized to see obeying the commandments of God as being different from pleasing him?

This morning as you take some time to think about the above questions in terms of an answer that you would provide for each, at the same time, look at what the Apostle Paul said in Hebrews 11:6. Here Paul makes the point that you MUST have FAITH in order the please God. We already know that the word FAITH means:

conviction of the truth of anything, belief;

in the New Testament: - of a conviction or belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things, generally with the included idea of trust and holy fervour born of faith and joined with it".

So, Paul is saying that in order for us to please God we must be convicted of the truth that God is a rewarder of them seek Him. We must believe in God and what He said in His words before we will be able to please Him. So, what does it mean to please God? The Larry Pierce’s Outline of Biblical Usage provides the following information on how the Greek word “euaresteō” for “please” can be used in this passage of scripture: "to be well pleased with a thing".

So, in order for God to determine that our words, thoughts and actions are “well pleasing” to Him, we MUST have FAITH in Him. Here Paul shows that there is a direct relationship with the measure of faith or belief that God gives to us and everything that we do and say are well pleasing to Him. This text is making the point that we need to ask God to help us to exercise the gift of faith that He has given to us in such a way that it transforms our heart and allows us to have words, thoughts and actions that are pleasing to Him.

Have you ever noticed how you can become really annoyed when you are being tested? Have you ever noticed how you can sometimes become angry when some test your patience? Sometimes as Christians we can become upset with God when we think that we are going through so many trials, test and tribulations. But could it be that God has a good reason why He is allowing you to have these testing experiences? Could it be that there is something God wants to develop in your character which cannot be done unless you are tested? Let us see what the Lord must tell us this today about the benefits of being tested.

In James 1:3, we see the Lord making the point that our faith needs to be tested in order for our patience to become strong. This morning as I took some time to look at the original words used in this passage of scripture, I found renewed meaning for the tests that I am facing at this present moment. I would like for us to look at the meaning of the following words:

Trying

Faith

Worketh

Patience

The Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words provides the following information of the Greek word “dokimion” that is used for “trying” in this passage of scripture.

Proof:
"a test, a proof," is rendered "proof" in Jam 1:3, RV (AV, "trying"); it is regarded by some as equivalent to dokimeion, "a crucible, a test;" it is the neuter form of the adjective dokimios, used as a noun, which has been taken to denote the means by which a man is tested and "proved" (Mayor), in the same sense as dokime (No. 1) in 2 Cr 8:2; the same phrase is used in 1 Pe 1:7, RV, "the proof (of your faith)," AV, "the trial;" where the meaning probably is "that which is approved [i.e., as genuine] in your faith;" this interpretation, which was suggested by Hort, and may hold good for Jam 1:3, has been confirmed from the papyri by Deissmann (Bible Studies, p. 259, ff). Moulton and Milligan (Vocab.) give additional instances.”

The Larry Pierce’s Outline of Biblical Usage provides the following information on the Greek word “pistis” that is used for “faith”:
“conviction of the truth of anything, belief; belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things…”

The Strong’s Definition provides the following information on the Greek word “katergazomai” that is used for “worketh”:
“to work fully, i.e. accomplish; by implication, to finish, fashion:”

The Larry Pierce’s Outline of Biblical Usage provides the following information on the Greek word “hypomonē” that is used for “patience”:
“steadfastness, constancy, endurance”

Based on the meaning of these words, could it be that God wants to build steadfastness, constancy, and endurance in you and that is why your belief in God is going through this test so that it can be proven? You see my friend; it is God’s intention to make you into a vessel of honor that is fit for Heaven, and through these tests, God will ensure that you have the faith required to stand on the sea of glass.

God will prove that His work of transformation has been completed in your heart and you are therefore fit and ready for the second coming of Jesus. It is my prayer that as you take some time to reflect on this passage of scripture that you will ask God to allow the Holy Spirit to remain in your heart so that as He continues to accomplish this work of developing endurance, it will be completed in your heart; thereby making you fit for heaven.
tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2192023-04-02T13:19:52-04:002023-07-16T19:12:48-04:00The Most Precious Gift (by Christopher Blackwood)Christopher Blackwood

The Most Precious Gift

All of us human beings love to get a gift - especially on our birthday. There is something about getting a gift that makes us feel special. For some of us, it is not only that we received a gift, but it is also about the type of gift that we received. For some, if the gift is expensive it provides an indication of how the person who gave us the gift, feels or thinks about us. For other individuals, it doesn’t matter what kind of gift they received. The fact that they received a gift was sufficient; and they drew the conclusion that they are special to the giver of the gift, because the giver didn’t have to give them a gift at all.

Take a moment to think about the MOST IMPORTANT and EXPENSIVE GIFT you have ever received from anyone. Do you remember how you felt when you received that gift? Do you remember what you said to the giver of the gift? Do you remember what you did with the gift? I can just imagine the emotions that are flooding through your mind right now as you remember all that was going on when you received that gift.

As you take some time to reflect on that expensive gift, the Lord wants to remind you of a gift that He has given to you long before you came into this earth. After Adam and Eve sinned, in Genesis 3:15, God promised that He would make a way to reconcile sinful human beings who were destined to be separated from God for eternity. Four thousand years after making this promise to Adam and Eve, that He would grant them the gift of Eternal Life, Jesus came to this earth and completed the first part of the provision of this gift. All human beings are awaiting the completion of the second part of this gift, which is the second coming of Jesus. In Rev. 3:11, God is reminding us that He is coming quickly to complete the promise that He made to Adam and Eve in Gen. 3:15.

In this text, we see God giving us a word of caution. Here God is telling us to be careful that someone doesn’t rob us of this gift of eternal life, that He has already given to all those who accept Him as their Lord and Saviour. You see my friend, Satan working through his human agents, can place obstacles in our way to pull us away from God. He may choose to use financial difficulties as the strategy to entice us to give up on God. He may choose to use the attitude and behaviour of family members, classmates, co-workers, church members and total strangers to frustrate us to the point where we give up on God. Satan is walking around as a roaring lion with ONLY ONE OBJECTIVE… to ROB human beings of the gift of eternal life.

It is my prayer that you will continue to surrender every single area of your life to the total control of the Holy Spirit, so that Satan will not be able to steal the crown of righteousness that God has in store for you. Please continue to keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, so that you will not become distracted by the fiery darts that Satan will place before you today.tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2182023-04-02T12:04:02-04:002023-07-16T19:13:13-04:00Through The Storm (by Lee Ann Brancker)Lee Ann Brancker

Through The Storm

How long, O Lord, must I struggle and fight?
This darkness is suffocating and I long to see light.
It seems I've been forever in this pit of despair
But I'll keep holding on because You promised You'll be near.

This test is my storm that You have allowed,
Give me strength to endure as the enemy prowls.
In this place of my preparation for what You have planned
Keep my eyes fixed on You, for You know where I'll land.

Though it's hard to keep going, this one thing I know
Because of Calvary, the enemy is a defeated foe.
So I'll trust You and keep praising as You sustain me,
Until out of the darkness the way You show I'll see.

KJV Psalms 23:4
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2172023-02-11T10:18:52-04:002023-04-02T12:00:30-04:00Stuck on the Verge (by Katie Riley)Katie Riley

It feels like just yesterday that the new year began and yet it is already the last day of January. Just yesterday everyone was doing the usual thing that many of us do at the beginning of a new year: wishing each other every good blessing for the year to come, making resolutions, setting goals, making plans and looking forward to change. But if we take a look back, how many of us can say that we achieved what we set out to in the past year or at least are on the path of doing what we said we would do?

Oakwood University Church in Huntsville, Alabama, began the year 2023 with a series entitled “On the Verge of Something…”. Pastor Debleaire Snell is convinced that many, if not all, of us are on the verge of something. The series dealt with being on the verge of physical, spiritual, mental, relationship, financial greatness, among other things.

What are you on the verge of? How long have you been on the verge? A new year usually suggests that we are on the verge of new beginnings. But how many of us are on the verge of beginnings from the start of the year but have not yet made any attempt to step off the verge? Maybe some of us are still on the verge of beginnings from last year or even the year before. If so, what is preventing us from stepping off the verge?

Remember the Israelites? God performed many miracles and granted them His favour so they could reach the Promised Land, yet they remained on the verge of entering that land for 40 years. Why? Lack of faith and trust, disobedience, looking back on the past, worrying, complaining, forgetting God’s goodness, promises and favour; all resulted in some of them remaining on the verge until their dying day, never stepping off that verge into greatness.

Maybe you are on the verge of better health; take the first step, start a simple exercise or cut out something from your diet, increase your water intake, go to bed earlier. Or maybe it is improving a relationship; make that call or visit, say you are sorry or extend forgiveness. Maybe you are on the verge of a spiritual breakthrough; start praying, or find a prayer partner if you are finding it difficult to pray, join a Bible study group or establish your own personal study time, trust God and start returning tithes, volunteer to do something at church. Maybe it is financial freedom; start that business, send out those applications, cut back on spending. Or maybe you are on the verge of personal development; write out your goals, write that poem or first chapter of that book, take that course or lessons, start reading, go to the beach, watch the sunset.

The list of what we are on the verge of is endless and the possibilities vary for all of us. What is evident is that we are all capable of moving off that verge with God’s help. By the same token, we can remain on that verge if we allow self and circumstances to stand in our way.

In the final analysis, to move off the verge, they are steps we can take:

Understand that God’s plans for our lives are the best (Jeremiah 29:11)

Align your will with God’s will (Romans 12:2) so that you are on His path and not your own.

Call out to God and seek Him with all your heart (Jeremiah 29: 12, 13; Matt 6:33)

Listen to His still small voice (1Kings 19:11-13)

Obey Him and reap the rewards of obedience (Deuteronomy 28)

I challenge you to say no to the obstacles of doubt, fear, worry, disbelief, procrastination etc. and stand tall on that verge, look out at the possibilities, then step off in faith, knowing that with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26) if we trust Him and obey. Do not be stuck on the verge of something great!

What does it mean? Do you live up to the dictates of your name? Do you know there is power in a name?

Our forefathers chose our names for various reasons. Some reasons are:

How we look (e.g. Princess)

Where we were born (e.g. London)

When we were born (e.g. Summer); and, more recently,

An amalgamation of our parents’ names (e.g. Patricia - a combination of Patrick and Tricia).

However the Bible shows us that names were also given as a way to acknowledge a new way of thinking or a new destiny. iIn Gen 41:45 Joseph’s name was changed to Zaphnath-paaneah. In Gen 32:28 Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. Even Saul was changed to Paul.

A new name represents a new beginning. There is power in a name. A name represents where you came from, your heritage. If you have an opportunity to name someone, i encourage you to give a name that represents a new beginning. The greatest name we have as God’s followers is the name Christian. Let’s live up to our name, let’s show the world that there is power in the name. There is power in the name of Jesus.tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2152022-10-14T05:29:08-04:002022-12-02T10:22:58-04:00Choose Hope (by Cheryl Grogan)Cheryl Grogan
Every October, people all over the world show their support for persons affected by breast
cancer. On Sunday October 2, 2022, thousands of Barbadians got the opportunity to participate
in the FirstCaribbean’s Walk For the Cure cancer awareness drive for the first time since 2019.
Some risk factors for cancer such as family history can’t be changed. However, there are some
lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk.

Here are a few tips:

- Limit alcohol consumption
- Maintain a healthy body weight
- Be physically active
- Breast-feed
- Limit postmenopausal hormone therapy

Can a healthy diet prevent breast cancer?

Eating healthy might decrease your risk of some cancers. Studies have shown that women who
eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts have a
reduced risk of breast cancer. The Mediterranean diet focuses on plant-based foods, such as
fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. It also includes healthier fats such as
olive oil over butter and fish rather than other meats.

If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, maintain a positive attitude as difficult as it may
seem. Patients with positive attitudes are better able to cope with disease-related problems
and may respond better to therapy. There is hope in Jesus. Hope keeps one alive to fight for
another day, a month, a year and a return to better health. Without hope, there is little to live
for. All is not lost. Trust God.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may
overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15: 13tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2132022-07-27T19:18:58-04:002022-10-14T05:43:29-04:00Do You Believe in Miracles? (by Lee Ann Brancker)Lee Ann Brancker

Do You Believe in Miracles?

Miracles can be seen as:

Marvelous manifestations of the power of God.

Incredible interventions of a divine nature in human affairs.

Radical remedies to present problems.

Amazing answers to life’s questions.

Creative conclusions to baffling situations.

Long-remembered occurrences of unexpected happenings.

Extraordinary events occurring when God steps in.

Supernatural signs that can only have come from God.

God’s Word is filled with such events that have been recorded for our benefit to encourage us in our Christian walk and show us that God is more than able to work in our behalf.

One example of such miracles is found in Exodus chapter 16 where God provided food in the form of manna for the Israelites. This miracle lasted for many years (about 40) until they crossed over the Jordan River and camped in Gilgal (see Joshua 5:10-12).

Another miracle is found in 2 Kings 19 when God delivered His people from King Sennacherib and the Assyrian army. Sennacherib claimed that no-one could save the people of Jerusalem from him, but when King Hezekiah prayed, God answered by killing 485,000 soldiers from the Assyrian army and God’s people were spared.

Though life may seem rough, and you may wonder where God is, don’t despair! The God of the miracles in the Bible, is the same God who takes care of you each day. Hebrews 13:8 says that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today and forever. He has promised to supply all that we need (Philippians 4:19) and never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

Do you believe in miracles? Do you believe that God can work on your behalf? If you do, then prove Him. If you aren’t sure or don’t know as yet, try Him. Just ask. Take Him at His Word. Then stand still and watch Him work.tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2092022-05-12T19:33:35-04:002022-07-27T19:19:56-04:00Victory in Jesus (by Cheryl Grogan)Cheryl Grogan

On Tuesday, May 17th the world focused on Hypertension or High Blood Pressure as it is known. Hypertension is a medical condition which increases the risk of heart failure, heart attacks and strokes and is known as a silent killer. This is because you might not even be experiencing any obvious symptoms to indicate that something is wrong.

In Barbados, according to the World Health Organisation, fifty (50%) of adults are hypertensive. This is indeed alarming but there is hope. Did you know that leading a healthful lifestyle can reduce and even reverse this condition?

Here are some useful tips:

It is important to reduce your salt intake; control your stress as much as possible; monitor your blood pressure at home; exercise regularly; refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol; get your annual physical check-ups; and control your body weight.

Studies also show that an increase in potassium helps to reduce or clear sodium from the body. Sodium contributes to hypertension because it prevents the kidneys from removing water from the body efficiently. This excess water leads to a hike in blood pressure.

Here are some high potassium foods that you can enjoy: spinach, tomatoes, avocadoes, prune/prune juice, bananas and sweet potatoes.

You might also wish to improve your fibre intake by topping up on legumes (variety of beans and peas), fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds (pumpkin, chia, flax etc.) nuts (almonds, pistachios etc.)

To increase fibre you can avoid peeling vegetables where possible; consider changing to whole meal and whole grain bread; swapping white rice and white flour for brown; or trying steel-cut or rolled oats instead of instant oats.

Bear in mind that your reaction to stress can also affect your blood pressure. Cast your cares and worries on Jesus and try to relax. Claim His promises as you read His word. Ask God to help you to break the curse of worry, fear, anxiety, and anger. Breathe deeply – practice this technique several times during the day as this relaxes the body, slows the heart rate and lowers blood pressure.

Keep calm, be positive, enjoy life, get enough sleep, and ALWAYS remember that you are God’s masterpiece put together by the hands of an Almighty Creator.

VICTORY IS OURS.
tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2082022-04-28T11:49:05-04:002022-05-12T19:34:03-04:00World Asthma Day (by Cheryl Grogan)Cheryl Grogan

World Asthma Day will be celebrated on May 3, 2022 with the aim of increasing awareness on how to control this respiratory problem and other allergic diseases.

Asthma is a long-term condition affecting children and adults. The air passages in the lungs become narrow due to inflammation and tightening of the muscles around the small airways. This causes asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. These symptoms can get worse at night or during some exercises.

Some common triggers are dust, colds, smoke, fumes, changes in weather, grass and tree pollen, animal fur, feathers, strong soaps and perfumes and sensitivity to some foods.

Barbados has a very high incidence of Asthma with an average of 10, 348 cases every year based on asthmatic attack data provided by the Accident and Emergency Department of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

If you suffer with Asthma, it is important to:

Use your inhaler daily if necessary

Learn and avoid your triggers

Avoid becoming overweight

Practice deep-breathing during exercises to help increase the lungs’ capacity. Controlled breathing also reduces stress which can induce asthma

Consider a diet rich in plants, fruits and vegetables to reduce the build-up of inflammation and irritation to your lungs

Avoid lots of processed and sugary foods which increase inflammation. This includes reading your labels.

A 2016 study in Nutrition Research Reviews concluded that supplementing with Omega 3 could also benefits asthma. This can be found in fish, fish oils, walnuts, chia seeds and flax seeds.

Don’t forget your Vitamin D…….spend some time, at least 20 minutes, in the sun daily.

Last and by no means least, ask God for healing. He is the same yesterday today and forever. His power to heal and love people has not changed.

Matthew 10: 1 says “ And He called to Him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out and to heal EVERY disease and EVERY affliction.
tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2062022-04-01T22:10:39-04:002022-04-28T11:49:34-04:00Clear The Stage(By Jamal Yearwood)Jamal Yearwood

Clear the stage! Remove the distractions. Think about it, just what is the point of having a mic in your hand if you only exalt yourself? Must your words not to reflect and proclaim God and His kingdom? Remove the band, the people who encourage worldly stances, the ones who purport the maxim, "life is just for living". Tell me, what is life worth without God? Take away the speakers, evaluate your thoughts. Are your thoughts promoting God, or are they promoting yourself?

Remove yourself and sit where the audience sits, see what they see, see who they see, do you like what you see? Do you see God in you? Turn off the lights, maybe they're stopping you from looking to the sky and seeing the true star of the show!!

No matter what we do or say, it is worthless if God is not in it - if He is not centre. So, where is your heart set? Does God sit on the throne of your heart? If He doesn't, what do you intend to do about it?tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2052022-03-19T20:30:00-04:002022-04-01T22:17:23-04:00Sing a Song Unto the Lord (by Jamal Yearwood)Jamal Yearwood

I sought the Lord; the great I Am. God Almighty, He reigns - there's nobody like You Lord! The victory belongs to Jesus; I am not alone! Surely goodness and mercy (which is the Lord) covers me, I need You! What a friend we have in Jesus, He will cover us in nothing but the blood (which is His own)!

Oh, come to the altar, even with an African medley. What shall I render? It all belongs to You! King of glory, how He loves! We are no longer slaves; He knows my name, what can I do? I'll just say yes one hundred billion times.

Where my feet fail, He will do it again!! You say, better; things are just going keep getting better!!! Your spirit, let it rain so that we may be gracefully broken!! Sometimes it takes a mountain for your glory to be seen. Oh freedom!! Let Your praises rise, You deserve it!!!
tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2042022-03-19T12:07:07-04:002022-03-19T20:37:49-04:00God's Love Revealed (by Jamal Yearwood)Jamal Yearwood
The nature of God is overwhelming. He sent His daughter "Mercy." She let me know that my sins would be forgiven, all I needed to do was ask. He sent His daughter "Grace" who let me know that though I fall short, through her I can obtain perfection. Along with her sisters, He sent "Joy" that my heart, even though it may know sadness, would consistently have a reason to praise.

He sent His son "Jesus" to die on our behalf, as a constant reminder of His love and His power. He died but also rose again. The last of the family is a constant guide leading me to do right, and to follow the path of salvation. He is the "Holy Spirit" a part of God Himself.

God went beyond all expectations and sent His family to draw us closer to Him. He even sent personal guards, Lord knows we keep the "Angels" busy.

Praise God with everything you have today, tomorrow is not guaranteed.

“According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue” 2 Peter 1:3tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2032022-03-13T11:03:10-04:002022-03-19T12:11:44-04:00Revelation by Jamal Yearwood Jamal Yearwood

Many lights on but I'm overcome with and overwhelmed by the shadows of my life. Many smiles, the laughter of a jovial man but broken am I. Pain violently crushing my spirit; unforgiven by the one who knows the truth, me!! The regrets; bad decisions; disappointment flooding my thoughts. Dreams, drowned in tears. Self-pity has no effect - nothing left to pity. I'm tired of beating my own drums, no rhythm left to uplift my spirit. Rather now the cracking of the wipe I made the words of God, I run in fear of the very words that brought me comfort.

What is wrong with me? Why do I want a castle but not worthy to be a king? How do I lead? What example would I set? I'm tired and in pain. Tired and in shame. I feel worthless, what does it take to be a man? Can a man be ravaged by his own thoughts? How can I be divided by me and myself, how can I win the battle that never ends? Questions asked but I can't answer me cause I lost track of who I am. Once thought I knew the joy of my life - now, I know I was blind. Feeling like shattered glass swept up in one dustpan but the pieces still divided.

When will I give You everything God? Is it too late to give all I have? Is it disrespectful of me to give You nothing? I ask because it feels like that's all I have left. Broken pieces of a vessel You wanted to use. Am I the salt that has lost its flavor? I know how You see me but I can't seem to see me as You do. Sigh!!! God take me, help me to die to self. I'm tired!!!
tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2022022-02-24T17:37:23-04:002022-03-13T11:06:39-04:00Who Lies Within?

Your worst enemy is also your best friend - and both are found in your mirror. Your biggest motivator and critic resides in you. Look in the mirror who do you see? The world could see your potential, but it's up to you to be who you are meant to be.

Recognize who you are within and change what you need to. Only then, will you see yourself as they do, and love yourself as you need to. No matter what good things people say about you, you will never truly believe until you have that innermost discussion with yourself. I know I had to!

God knows, He was right there along side me!!

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
Isaiah 41:10 KJV
tag:holdershillsda.org,2005:Post/2012022-02-10T13:55:39-04:002022-02-24T17:38:41-04:00The Emptiness Within (Jamal Yearwood)Jamal Yearwood

Once filled with the sounds of praises, flowing from the mouths of its congregation, singing the songs of praise - now filled with the sounds of the emptiness of the seats, a deafening sound of silence, disturbed only by the whispers of the wind passing through the spaces in the windows; replacing the boisterous sounds of walls filled with voices. Visits to the world wide churches on the world wide web holds no significance when the warmth of the person not seen within can't be held in a sweet embrace.
Smiling faces now restricted to the screen, so close, yet separated by miles, once those smiles were merely an arms length away.

The time is coming, the day shall arrive, the crowds shall gather, the people will cheer, the building may not exist but the heavens will open. When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be, praises will rise, dancing won't cease, all will sing in one accord. Keep the faith, God is not dead, nor does He slumber or sleep. The King is coming - when the roll is called up yonder let's all be there.

We are the church, if our faith crumbles so do the walls of our temples.
